GIBBS ROUNSAVALL
March 7 - 31, 2008

A solo show in the Victor Jory Theatre Lobby.

Earning his B.F.A. in illustration from Washington University in St. Louis and an M.A.T. in art education from University of Louisville, Rounsavall has shown in New York at the Museum of Contemporary Diasporan Art, in Ohio and throughout Louisville.

This exhibit is a comprehensive collection of works that offer insight into my creative process. Each piece starts with a basic element or building block, such as a line, shape or color. I twist, turn, bend and stretch these elements searching for their hidden potential, similar to the experience of teaching oneself how to play a musical instrument. After a time of experimentation, I eventually feel equipped to play this "instrument" and being the process of composing.
–Gibbs Rounsavall

LOUISVILLE TREASURES LARGE AND SMALL
October 31, 2007 - January 2, 2008

At the age of twelve, Virginia–born James McArthur was introduced to painting and watercolors. It was to be a life-long friendship. His teacher had been a student of New England artist Elliot O’Hara and enthusiastically endorsed O’Hara’s use of strong colors and bold brushwork.

McArthur continued to paint during his school years and throughout his professional career, finding time whenever possible for classes, workshops and painting excursions. Since his retirement as Director of International Technical Services for Yum! Brands, he has had time to paint on a more regular basis and has enjoyed experimenting with new techniques and subjects. This current series, “Louisville Treasures, Large and Small”, concentrates on architecture and scenes of Louisville’s Main Street, Butchertown, Crescent Hill, Old Louisville, Churchill Downs and other areas.

The artist has had paintings exhibited in Louisville’s Spectra Gallery, Actors Theatre, Jewish Community Center and Artemisia, as well as shows and galleries in other cities and states. Currently, he has painting in private collection in Georgia, Tennessee, Kentuckty, Virginia, California and England.

Called “Jim” by some and “Scotty” by others, he is a long-time Louisville Resident, an active community volunteer and a Charter Member of the Kentucky Watercolor Society (KWS). Repeated acceptance of his works for juried shows sponsored by KWS has elevated him to the status of Signature Member.
